A Vision

inkwell, October 15, 2025

By Rosie Lilot

I stop, I breathe, and I see.

I see the sunlight shining through the trees
In all the perfect places
So that it creates a canopy
So surreal
That the world around me looks
Like a painting.

I see ripples in the water
Everywhere that the flow of the stream
Encounters a rock
And it creates an effect
So defined yet undefined
That it could almost be
An unfinished drawing.

I see a brown squirrel
Sitting calmly on a rock
So still
And so real
Not moving a single muscle
That I wonder
If I am really looking at a squirrel
Or just a photograph.

I see a clear blue sky
All clear and all blue
That I forget
About the absence of clouds
And I realize
It is the background
To the painting of the trees
The drawing of the water
And the photograph of the squirrel.

I see a pathway
In the middle of this masterpiece
That surrounds me
It sits right there
Within the trees
By the water
Near the squirrel
Under the sky.

It brings it all together
And forms the
Living
Breathing
Sculpture
That is everything around me
At this very moment.

I stopped
I breathed
And
I took it all in.
